Job Description

As a senior member of the Divisional Management Team and supported by the Divisional Executive Director, the Associate Director actively contributes to the leadership of the Division by providing guidance and assisting the direction in the development and implementation of strategies in support of the division’s operational plan and the College’s overall strategy.

 

You will inspire, motivate and work strategically with the Executive Director to empower others, building a high-performance culture leading and supporting transformational change in both divisional business and culture.

 

You will provide leadership on the division’s work in relation to examinations, assessment and training standards, digital development and international relationships. You will be responsible for meeting regulatory requirements and the College’s education and training standards for the paediatric workforce incorporating standards for safe and effective practice, curricula, assessment and examinations.

 

You will work with the Executive Director in ensuring that the division makes a significant contribution to the development and achievement of the College strategy and on a day-to-day basis provide senior operational and strategic support to your Heads of Department and their teams. Alongside this you will be responsible for sponsoring and leading on strategic projects that cover multiple areas of the division’s work.

 

You will have strong cross-division networks and work collaboratively with contacts, suppliers, the committee structure and networks both internally and externally. 

Responsibilities

  1. Provide senior strategic direction and operational leadership for your three reporting Departments, setting a high standard of work outcomes and a proactive and supportive work culture.
  2. Provide strategic support to the Executive Director, Divisional Officers and appropriate boards on all aspects of examination and assessment, and lead on matters of assessment policy.
  3. Provide senior leadership in managing and collaborating with external stakeholders and regulators both in the UK (such as Health Education England and the General Medical Council) and internationally.
  1. Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to ensure the College’s quality assurance processes for examinations and training are robust, flexible and relevant across the various levels of training and sub-specialities
  2. Sponsor and lead on strategic projects, including international, that cover multiple areas of divisional work.
  3. Ensure that all exams and assessment activity is delivered throughout the training year and according to the Operational Plan.
  4. Support the work of the Executive Director (including deputising where appropriate), including on developing our international relationships and succession planning.
  5. Provide recommendations and advice on business development to the Divisional Director and other committees through regular high-quality reports and data analysis.
  6. Undertake senior responsibility for the management of service contracts, relationships with suppliers and planning for future digital development with the Digital Division.
  7. Provide senior support to line managers, in developing and managing divisional and departmental budgets.

Skills Required

Essential

  • Suitable qualification at graduate level or relevant professional experience
  • Experience of working in a leadership role with a demonstratable ability to combine both strategic and operational leadership
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of professional training, competency-based education and assessment and regulatory standards
  • Proven experience of initiating and leading programmes of change, generating new ideas and innovative ways of working
  • Demonstratable experience of competency-based education design and delivery
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written including excellent report writing skills and the ability to present information in a fluent and persuasive manner to people at a range of levels
  • Demonstratable ability to use initiative to prioritise workload and work under pressure to achieve tight schedules and deadlines
  • Proven understanding of the principles of project management and of overseeing complex projects delivered on time
  • Demonstrable experience in developing quality assurance procedures and systems
  • Proven experience at a management level managing multi-disciplinary personnel
  • Proven experience of budgetary management including budget preparation and forecasting
  • Demonstrable strategic thinking and analytical skills
